A lot of reviews and blogs regarding this movie really took the film makers to task about the use of perspective and scale to create illusions, especially in reference to the "giant" insects and possums climbing out of the coffins at the beginning. While this might seem campy to us, for 1931 the production value was pretty incredible.Keep in mind this was during the Great Depression. People were fainting and practically losing their minds in terror from these effects at the time. It's not like they had CGI or animatronics back then. They could have used stop motion or pulled little plastic creatures on strings but that would have been far more time consuming or just way more ridiculous looking. All in all this film was rather impressive given the budget restraints and the relatively low expectations in the realm of special effects.
