One of my favorite new horror films. Very powerful movie produced by Lewton.
It's not only what is said, but what isn't - the silence is just as effective as the scripted lines. The choices we make (and others make for us) about life and death, good and evil, and right and wrong. Another movie which can be interpreted to be about control; the control over one's own life.
Especially interesting was the documentary; lesbianism (I must admit, I didn't catch it), satanic societies, infidelity, insanity, it's all here. The concept that stays with me is that the quiet undertone voices seem more sinister - terror is heightened when contrasted with normalcy. This movie contrasts the two beautifully.
The lead young actress is Kim Hunter - she went on to play Stella in Streetcar of Desire (where you can recognize her), and Dr. Zira in Planet of the Apes (although you won't recognize her).
