I can see how maybe some back then MAY have seen this film as a horror film but in my opinion this was a religious film. The acting was good, especially the actor who portrayed the devil. I know the theme and yes it is horrible and people are often caught in this dilemma however not everyone has the same religious views so that is why I view this as a religious film and not a horror film.
In my personal opinion, with apologies to all the Christians out there, organized religion gets half of it's followers from the addiction of feeling that there is a benevolent being looking out for them and the other half from the threat of the worst things happening to them if they do not believe. Guilt, fear, and love are the strongest of emotions and most religions use as leverage all three. Whatever your most vulnerable area is the targeted area. Faust is one of the stories (it is a very old story) that uses fear as a tool for keeping Chritians in line.
ReplyDeleteVery well said!! I agree with your what you are saying.
DeleteThe devil was so great in this movie. I loved the costumes, makeup, and the devil's hairline was superbly drawn-in. I agree that this movie is heavy on religion and light on horror. So many horror movies trade on religious ideals of perceived Christian "evil." I wonder if there are horror movies made in Eastern religion countries since those religions recognize the "evil" in man without prejudice. Hmm.
