So Lonely...Glub Glub: Creature from the Black Lagoon

I always try to search for deeper content and larger context in any older film that I watch, but much like the picture above, I'm not sure there is too much of either in The Creature from the Black Lagoon. Just a simple story about a lonely green fish man that evolution forgot and the world doesn't understand. Or maybe it relates to the reoccuring theme found in early sci-fi and horror, that a bigger, stronger (and often dumber) "guy" will come and take away your lady(King Kong, etc, etc.). Maybe some sort of bitter memory from these screenwriter's high school experience is what  inspires this common plot structure. I imagine these guys being kind of nerdy types who, in their minds, were writing revenge fantasies about riddling the neanderthal football player who stole their high school sweetheart with bullets thus winning her back. Maybe if they were really outcasts, they were saying that THEY were the monster and these stories are tragic reimaginings of their plights. I'm really grasping at straws here...I do wonder though, what if no one came to rescue these women? What are all these lonely monsters' true long term intentions? Do they just want someone to play Scrabble with? Mating probably wouldn't work out that well...but I'm not going to delve into that. I'll leave that freaky business to Adrian Brody(*watch Splice...on second thought...don't).

  1. Professor Hammond may approve submission into the Encyclopedia of Horror on this deep, way deep post, Jake. If the women would just give these poor monsters a chance - I'm sure they would all be really good listeners - I mean, that's all Frankenstein ever wanted, just somebody to love.

Hm. I just realized that no one faints in the water ... interesting twist on helpless women.
